Cardinal Glennon adds dedicated ambulance to Cape Girardeau base
Southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois children can now receive life-saving pediatric care faster than ever before. SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center just added a dedicated pediatric ambulance at its Cape Girardeau transport base.
Specially trained transport nurses staff the Cape Girardeau base 24 hours a day. The base opened in November 2011 and enables transport nurses to quickly reach children who need their expert care.
“We’ve seen firsthand the need for fast access to the treatment our team can provide,” said Karen Zahn, team leader for the SSM Cardinal Glennon transport team. “By working with our hospital and EMS partners in southeast Missouri, we are able to quickly reach children who need our help. Having a dedicated ambulance will only increase the level of care we’re able to offer to children who need us.”
For premature babies and badly injured children, every moment is crucial. Specially trained nurses on the team provide life-saving treatment while transporting a child to SSM Cardinal Glennon, which has a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and Level IV NICU, both the highest designation. Patients are transported via ambulance or helicopter.
The transport team is comprised of registered nurses and respiratory therapists with advanced training in stabilization, treatment and transport of small infants and injured children. An attending physician may also accompany the transport team when needed.
