Preparing for the Unexpected 

An emergency childbirth workshop for EMS and ER personnel

Program description

This program was developed to meet the needs of health care professionals confronted
with an unexpected, emergent birth; subsequent neonatal care and stabilization in a non-obstetric setting.

Primary audience

Emergency medical transportation professionals, ER nurses and allied health professionals, especially in a hospital without obstetrics (OB) services are the primary audience for this course.

Continuing education credits

SSM Health is an approved provider of continuing EMS education by the State of Missouri Bureau of EMS. This educational offering is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Southwestern Illinois EMS System for 6.75 hours of continuing education.

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital are approved providers of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This program has been approved for 6.75 contact hours.

Perinatal Outreach Services is a collaboration between SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, SSM Health St. Mary's and St. Louis University School of Medicine serving both Missouri and Illinois. These institutions are committed to teaching, research and the highest level of patient care. The Southern Illinois Perinatal Program is administered through SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and SSM St. Mary’s Health Center.

The Southern Illinois Perinatal Program is administered through both SSM Health hospitals. These facilities have been jointly designated as the regional tertiary Administrative Perinatal Center for southern Illinois by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
